The pathogenesis of retinal vein occlusion – an update

Hattenbach L. O.
Augenklinik des Klinikums Ludwigshafen, Ludwigshafen am Rhein

To date, there are still gaps in understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Known risk factors for RVO include systemic vascular disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia and glaucoma. Moreover, thrombophilic disorders have been shown to be associated with the development RVO in specific subgroups of patients. In addition, there is mounting evidence that several ocular factors may have an impact on the prognosis in RVO. Based on the multifactorial pathogenesis of circulatory disorders of the retinal veins, various new therapeutic approaches have been developed in the past few years. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of our current scientific knowledge of RVO with regard to the treatments commonly advocated.
