AbstractDO.16.03 The current status of laser trabeculoplasty in the treatment of glaucoma Eckert S. Laser trabeculoplasty was developed as a treatment for open angle glaucoma in the 1970s and larger studies proved its effectiveness in the years that followed. Its precise mechanism of action is still unclear. In recent years, through the implementation of newer processes such as selective laser trabeculoplasty, laser trabeculoplasty has experienced further developments. Since it causes less damage to the trabecular meshwork, it should have fewer adverse effects, making it a repeatable treatment. Therefore lasertrabeculoplasty could be also an initial therapy. The various theories of the mechanism of action of laser trabeculoplasty, as well as the characteristics and technical differences in laser systems are discussed. The pre- and post-operative management depend on the practical execution and possible side effects. Furthermore studies on the indication and effectiveness of this method are reviewed, especially in comparison to other conservative and operative treatment options. Its current place in the treatment of glaucoma, including socioeconomic aspects, is discussed. |
