Femto-Laser vs. mikrokeratom: Comparisson of flap thickness

Objective: After implementation of the IntraLase femtosecond-laser to our Lasercenter we prospective investigatet the flap thickness of the first 172 Lasik from 09/2006 in comparison to the BD 4000 Microkeratom.
Methods: Using ultrasound pachymetrie we mesured prae- and intraoperatively the corneal respectively the stromal bed thickness of 172 consecutive Lasik procedures including 74 IntraLase femto flaps and 98 Microkeratom cuts.
Results: Mean value of Lasik flap thickness was 113 µm when the IntraLase femtosecond laser was used and 98 µm with the BD 4000 Mikrokeratom. Standard derivation was 14 µm (IntraLase) and 20 µm (Microkeratom). Flap thicknesses ranched from 90-150µm; 60-150 µm respectively.
Conclusions: Surprisingly the corneal flaps obtained by the Microkeratom were thinner even using the 130 µm head compered to the flaps achieved with the 100 µm setting with the IntraLase. The remaining advantage of the laser flaps were less variance compared to the Microkeratom cuts.
