AbstractDO.17.02 Findings of 354 consecutive femtosecond laser cuts for LASIK Kohnen T.1,2, Klaproth O. K.1, Derhartunian V.1, Kook D.3 1Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main; 2Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA; 3Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Objective: Due to the technique, common used rotating knifes (microceratomes) for flap creation in LASIK consistantly induce cut complications like "button holes" or incomplete Flaps. Femtosecond (fs) lasers shall reduce these risks, because in comparison to the microceratomes fs lasers are working more precise and individual, thus the flap can be individualised to the patients eye conditions. Thereby surgery should be a less strain to patients, vision should recover faster and optical quality should be optimized. Methods: 354 conscutive fs laser cuts for laSIK between August 2006 and March 2008 are evaluated and compared to the aproved key literature. Results: During all cuts just two complications (incomplete ring cuts of about 60°) accured. both were completed with a diamond knife. Other complikations did not occur. The known microceratome cut complications did not accure. Conclusions: In comparison to microceratome LASIK fs LASIK is afflicted with very few cut complications, and thus is the safer method.
