Abstract

DO.18.02

Immunology of corneal transplantation

Larkin D. F. P.
Cornea & External Diseases Service, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London

While on the one hand the immunology of corneal transplantation shares many features with other transplanted tissues, there are however important immunological and clinical differences. I will review selected concepts in immunology of the allogeneic response to a cornea which inform what we observe in experimental transplantation and in patients. These will include differential importance of components of immune privilege and its erosion in clinical practice, allorecognition in corneal transplantation, T lymphocyte activation in corneal transplantation, factors constituting high rejection risk and why, and effector mechanisms in corneal rejection.
